Ashley, Jenny, and I have spent much of the last three days editing audio for our art installation for our Theology I class. Here’s the invitation to the community:
“We are excited and deeply honored to invite you to interact and explore our art installation on the second floor by the large classroom, near the TA office. This installation is the product of our integrative theology research project for Dr. Stearn’s Theology I class this Fall. We set out together to “research” the process of what it means to engage in conversation about incredibly unique theologies and faith practices. Our process was grueling. We failed in many, many ways but ultimately continued to come back to our chairs. And, along the ride, we audio recorded every moment of our conversations and experience.
The installation is three different chairs, with iPods hanging from above. Each iPod has a different part of our story, creatively put together. One with our prayers and hesitations, another with our confusions, conflicts, and failures; and another with our final emotions, reflections, questions, and grounding quotes.
We invite you, however you may come, to sit in the chair(s) and listen to an unfolding story about the uncomfortable tension of staying in the midst of dissonance, ambivalence and overwhelming desire.
With these tracks very literally being our voices, hearts, and emotions, we are thankful to be a part of community oriented towards engaging story, conversation and people well. Without you, this project would not be the same; truly, thank you for allowing us to express ourselves in this capacity.
The installation will be up for the remainder of this week through Thursday evening and again next week (with a temporary take down for our community Holiday party Friday night).”
And, here’s the signage hung with the installation:
You are different.
Us also.
So we sat.
To listen. To share. To know. To love.
We failed.
These chairs
Different in design,
Tied together by orientation.
Highlighting and revealing
the beauty of blood spilled as we continued
to come back to our chairs.
The sound from above
Three distinct parts
United by one narrative.
Exposing our conversations
Our prayer.
Our brokenness.
Our hope.
Will you choose to sit?
And listen?
To one part?
All parts?
How will you come to the chair?
